[46 images][news/links][14 vids] 비 Yourself Open Thread 11/1 — 11/30/2020. BackToTheBasic overload!

There has been a huge influx of new Rain fans, and Rain has mentioned working on new music. Now is a great time to go all the way back and get folks up to speed on his albums, from 1998 to 2020!

The eighth installment of my Rain Career Music special series celebrates when Rain dropped his next Korean offering, mini album Back To The Basic, in April 2010. There was also a Japanese edition (in Japanese), and a Chinese/Taiwanese edition. We had just gone live on January 21, so Cloud USA was only 3 months old, babes in the woods during our first Rain music comeback! An exciting and tiring time indeed, as his comeback trail was KILLER, he did not and does not play! (Want proof? Go here to our old Rain on the Horizon History Page and check out April and May 2020. Whew! We were tired and overwhelmed, and poor Rain was so exhausted that he collapsed with the flu at a TV taping and scared us all half to death. Never fear, though — he rallied back strong! Pardon the mess on our homepages — we’re in the process of moving our site to a new host.)  ^@@^

The album’s imagery took people by surprise. It was super-sexy (as expected), yet so different that some folks just didn’t get it. The story is, as Rain said in an interview, that while in Europe, the épicène beauty of its ancient statues and sculptures had fascinated him so much, he wanted to do his own interpretation. And indeed, if his album images were marble or plaster statues, they would absolutely resemble that art, IMHO!

And about those long eyelashes…

In another interview, Rain said they represented his vulnerability in the “Love Song” music video. I can vouch that that is true! As a fiction writer, I created a hardened, top-dog warrior king character once, and I gave him long eyelashes, knowing that female readers would take one look at them and sense he was hiding how vulnerable his heart was. Rain got it right! *applause, applause*

Rain had always been a multitasking monster from the start, but 2010 was record-setting, y’all. In addition to releasing this album, he filmed several SK Telesys phone campaigns, filmed TV drama The Fugitive: Plan B on location in no less than 7 countries across Asia, held a multi-city ZEPP concert tour across Japan, headlined the Intensity concert in the Philippines, covered Hanyru Pia, Cosmo Men, and several other magazines, attended the MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles and won the first Biggest Badass Star statuette (for Ninja Assassin), came in 4th on Time Magazine‘s 100 Most Influential People for 2010, and that’s just the tip of it, I’m stopping here (again, check out our Rain on the Horizon History Page linked above, from January to December 2010. It would take a post as long as my arm to notate everything, good lord!).

Official MV. “Love Song”, the album’s first release. We were all waiting for a first look at this MV across the world, and when it finally streamed, the fainting did commence. Yowza!! Stupid TRIVIA: KBS claimed that this MV was inappropriate for broadcast because of Rain’s complete disregard for traffic regulations while sprinting wildly up the street at the beginning of it. We laughed at KBS, as did people and journalists around the world. LMAO  ^@@^

Clip. “Love Song” live, from Rain’s special comeback stage on Inkigayo. TRIVIA: The very first live performance happened with Rain and crew revealing bare chests, just like in the MV. However, the Korean censors had a fit and from that point on, Rain and crew had to put those little vests underneath their shirts, just like in this performance, so that the viewing audience would not be “led astray.” LOL!! (NOTE: Please CLICK over and watch it on YouTube. Thanks!) ^@@^

Clip. Making of the “Love Song” MV, with actress Han YeSeul. Cute and fun! Gets a laugh out of me every time. Mmm… can you imagine being her? ^@@^

Clip, on Japanese news. During his comeback trail, Rain spent an entire day promoting and autographing his new album at three different stops in Seoul. During the first autograph party at iPark Mall around 2:30 pm, shown here, he seemed to truly enjoy himself.

When he got to the second stop at Music Korea Myungdong around 4 pm, as you can see, he was no longer smiling and with good reason. Security had done a piss-poor job of protecting him when his van had to drive into and park in a virtual sea of fans. He’d had to get out smashed up against the van as fans went insane; one of them grabbed his arm in a death grip, wouldn’t let go, and nearly yanked it out of the socket and hurt him to where he yelped. (Check this out. We were so pissed!! 🤬) He somehow made it inside the building in one piece, favoring his arm and clearly upset. When it came to autographing as fans came in, however, he handled everyone graciously, like a champ. As far as I know, the third autograph stop at Hottracks around 7 pm was incident-free, thank the K-Pop gods. Ugh! ^@@^

Clip. Making of the “Love Song” MV on location. Adorable and ridiculously funny. A real favorite! Just like while filming the part of the MV where he’s running up the road, it was 32° F on a March winter night and Rain was freezing his ass off. It was hell trying to keep his muscles popping in that bone-chilling cold! LOL He talked about how the bling on their outfits were real Swarovski crystals, 1000s of them hand-sewn on, and because of that, the cost of all those outfits was the same as a car. Whaaaaaaaat? 🙂 ^@@^

Clip. The second time we saw Back To The Basic‘s second track, “Hip Song”, performed during Rain’s comeback trail, probably on Music Core. Loved. The. Clothes! The very first time, on M! Countdown, mysterious and amazing with Rain all in B-Boy white and never fully showing his face, has either been scrubbed from the Internet or the videos will not embed. A shame! (NOTE: Please CLICK over and watch it on YouTube. Thanks!) ^@@^

Clip, English-subbed. Rain’s KBS World Star Date at the MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles, where he won the first Biggest Baddass Award statuette for his role of “Raizo” in Ninja Assassin! All we had to know 2 months before this was he was in the running for the award against the likes of Sam Worthington, Angelina Jolie, Chris Pine, etc. We U.S. Clouds descended on the MTV USA website like a PLAGUE, with Korean Clouds, Japanese Clouds, and other world Clouds with us, and voted for Rain as if we were on fire. When MTV realized the votes for him were through the roof and it looked like he would win, they hurriedly sent Rain an invitation to come to the awards, haha. We were so proud of him. We celebrated after he won for like, a month! ^@@^

MV. Did you know that “Hip Song” was included on the Korean soundtrack for The Karate Kid (2010) starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith? Now you know! 🙂 ^@@^

Clip, English-subbed. A wonderfully fun interview where Rain and a few of his crew (Hongshi, Soobong, and Songtak) worked with Namyong and other trainers in the gym to keep their bodies in Back To The Basic shape. The second part, with Rain and the interviewer enjoying a light meal, continues the funny. hehe~ ^@@^

Clip. The final time we saw “Hip Song” on the Back To The Basic comeback trail, and a favorite because of those amazing black pants, ha! We hated to see it all end, but Rain had to get on a plane to the U.S.A. for the MTV Movie Awards and to Japan to start filming The Fugitive: Plan B. So much to do, so little time! ^@@^

Fan made. An AMAZING compilation of “Hip Song” comeback performances on Inkigayo, Music Core, Mnet Countdown, Open Concert, and a benefit concert, by the one and only Rain Cloud lunaluna. There was discussion among Clouds and fans about whether or not, at the end (minute marker 3:22), that was a goodbye tear coming down Rain’s cheek from the emotion of his final Back To The Basic comeback stages, or just sweat. I always considered it a tear. What do you think? ^@@^

Choreography practice. During Rain’s J.Tune Camp days. I don’t know why, but that weird leg lift/stomp at the end (that he ended up taking out of the choreography) cracks me up every time. hehe~ ^@@^

Fan cam. This is from five years later, when Rain performed 3rd track “One” at the Seoul stop of his The Squall Asia Concert Tour (2015 – 2016). So adorable and naughty at the same time, haha. This song is VERY special to us here in Atlanta because the word “shawty” originated here, in our city, and music aficionado Rain had to have known that. Along with him wearing blinged out versions of our Major League Baseball team’s ball cap (and New York’s as well), the Back To The Basic era is simply our favorite. ❤️❤️ ^@@^

Rain is Eternal. Where clouds stay gathered, rain will always come. It is inevitable.
