Mrs. Betty Jo Trotter Thomas

Dearest Clouds,

It is with sadness and a broken heart that I let you all know that two days ago on October 5, this past Wednesday evening, Terri’s mother passed away after a sudden illness.

From the very beginning of my and Terri’s 22-year journey as best friends, Miss Betty’s nurturing spirit affected my life in many ways. She might have been quiet and soft-spoken, and positively dwarfed by the huge, long white car that she wheeled around like a boss back then (haha ❤ ), but the strength of her character and devotion to her family were larger than life to me. That Southern hospitality you’ve always heard about in Atlanta? Miss Betty was the epitome of that. When you visited her home, her welcome warmed you, her conversation encouraged you, and you didn’t leave hungry or thirsty, that’s for sure.

bthomas13She was a true Southern lady.

When it came to her family, she was an Energizer Bunny, a tireless protector and advocate. Her kindness was definitely not weakness. And even though we shared not one drop of blood between us, she treated me like a second daughter, as if I were her precious Terri’s sister, and I loved that, especially after losing my own mom.

Things I’m going to miss about Miss Betty… her sweet voice and infectious laugh, how loving she was with my little grandson, the firsthand health advice she would give me when I needed it, talking about her progress on her family Genealogy project, talking about things Rain, and not being able to walk into the house without her feeding me.

bthomas2Miss Betty was a devoted educator of children and longtime resident of Mableton, Georgia. Teaching was her calling and she worked in the Cobb County school system for over 30 years in a variety of positions at the middle school level. She was also a passionate advocate for the deaf and hearing impaired and, along with other parents, helped to achieve the mainstreaming of the first deaf children into the Cobb County public education system.

At the time of her passing, she’d been married to Bobby G. Thomas, the love of her life, for 59+ years, and nurtured a daughter (Terri), two sons (Robert and Tim), and five grandsons. She enjoyed gardening, researching her family’s genealogy, writing, art, computers, and singing in the Mount Harmony Baptist Church choir. She will be sorely missed by her friends, family, and all who knew her.

Many lives are going to be emptier without her in them.

I miss you already, Miss Betty. Thank you for everything. And thank you for having our Terri. ❤

Please join me in supporting Terri and the rest of her family during the trying days to come.

Thanks everyone,

Stephe ^@@^

    • Hi, Dot. Yes, the whole family was blessed by her presence. She was a quiet, gentle soul. Never asked much of anyone and yet gave everything of herself to everyone. If I can manage to become even half like her I will have done well.

Thank you for your kind words.

  15. My apologies it should say Mrs. Betty not Ms. Betty. I see a lot of resemblance between Terri and her mom in the pictures. As you look at her one can tell she is exactly as you described her. God Bless everyone!

    • No apologies necessary, Maria! Mrs. Betty or Ms. Betty or Miss Betty — it doesn’t matter. You’re referring to the same wonderful lady either way, so it’s all good. 🙂

You’re right — there is a big resemblance between the two. You should see Ms. Betty’s young pics! 🙂

Thank you for your kind words. (And yes, I’ve been told many times that I look strikingly like my mom in her younger years.)
