[series][clip][MV] From Stephe’s desk: Rain (비) TV performances that made me wanna shout! (#5)

R200324BDAS3_CUSA

What: The 24th Blue Dragon Awards, Special Performance

Where: The National Theater of Korea, Seoul

When: 12/11/2003

How many times it made me want to shout: 8

1) How he took the audience off guard with his entrance was brilliant. Surprise! haha~ And that voice! 😉

2) Ohhhhh, look at all that swag coming down that aisle. And those pants do fit in a special kind of way, hey. @_@

3) There ya go, Rain… take a moment to thrill the young ingenues and actresses. #SwaggaliciousGentleman

4) I wanted to snatch that magazine from that guy in the second row and beat THAT GUY over the head with it. Could you be more impolite during someone’s performance? On TV?? Just… lame. Lol~

5) This was a year and a half after Baby 비’s debut, and he had seasoned up nicely indeed, don’t you think? His second album was out, and this performance of the “Escaping the Sun” GTR Remix was on point yet smooth and understated instead of energetic. It was like his body was moving by itself without him consciously doing it.

6) I had to laugh at the female celebrities in the audience who were targeted by the cameramen. They tried to keep poker faces for fear of scandalous headlines the next day, haha (Exclusive! Rain is so-and-so’s Ideal Man!) but they failed miserably. Those poor ladies. Popular actress Moon Geun Young was so cute and soooo young (he stopped to sing to her).

(*Note: Incidentally, there were arguments in YouTube comments about the mesmerized young lady at minute marker 2:45 being his present girlfriend, actress Kim Tae Hee, with others arguing back that it’s actress Song Yoon Ah. For the record, the person is Song Yoon Ah.)

7) Dance break time! Rain makes his shoe a prop, ha! How’s that for creative? Dancer SangQ had dreadlocks back then, and threw his signature running back flip. Thumbs up! I do believe Hongshi, SungTak, and NamYong were on stage as well…

8) “Escaping the Sun” was the 3rd Rain song I heard as a new fan, and the first Rain song that I could sing all the way through.

I remember driving my mom home from chemotherapy one day with a Rain CD playing, and starting to sing along with the song without even realizing it. The look on Mom’s face when I finished was priceless. She’d never heard a word of Korean come out of my mouth up to that point, much less a whole song. LOL~

» You can see the song lyrics in English and Korean romanization on our Rain Discography page HERE.

bonus2And a Bonus: For those who haven’t seen it, here’s the official “Escaping the Sun” music video, so you can compare the original song to the subtle differences in the GTR Remix.

There was a time that, as a new fan with sketchy Internet service, I lived in fear of not being able to listen to this gorgeous song every day. Later, it became the theme song for one of my fictional characters who was a creature of the night and wasn’t able to be in the sun in over a century (I write novels).

Until next Monday, peeps!

  1. For the record, I hate rapping except when Rain does it and one song from the Chuno soundtrack. I know Rain became one of the main rappers with his early boyband group. And I hear him on his early songs of his solo career. Does anyone know why he seems to have moved away from it?

    • Well, it’s only my opinion, but I don’t think he moved away from it, per se… Rain just seems like the type to do what he is moved by or do what feels right at the time, you know? Either there were other genres that he wanted to explore more for a while, or for all we know, songwriter/producer JYP might have stopped giving him rap opportunities after album #2, until Rain went on his own in 2008. *shrug* I’ve always thought he might have been kind of forcibly pigeon-holed as K-Pop when all along he’s really been R & B…

Since he’s been on his own, he’s started coming back to it. In 2010, he rapped a verse on “Hip Song” (Back To The Basic mini-album). In 2011, he wrote a song for MBLAQ (the group he put together and produced) for their first album and included a rap in there for Mir.

On his most recent dance album, Rain Effect (2014), he must have gotten a rapping itch because out of 8 songs, he rapped on 6 of them. “Dear Mama Don’t Cry”, “Found Out”, “Marilyn Monroe”, “Superman”, and “LA Song” all have rap verses. “Where Are You, Oppa?” (with Hyuna) is ALL rap, he and Hyuna don’t sing a word, LOL~ I adore that song.

I’m really curious as to what he’s going to do on his upcoming album. It could go either way, whichever way the wind blows him.

      • Thanks, Stephe. You always have the best answers. Has anyone ever told you that you have a knack for finding the silver lining? 😉

        • You’re welcome.^^ Umm, no one’s really said that to me, Lol~ I will take it as a compliment! 🙂

I had a lot of challenges growing up and into adulthood, so I think it’s just an instantaneous thing that I learned to do to survive that stuff. And then, when I found Rain, listening to him always being positive even about things that caused him pain, I admired that in him, and so…

Me really pissed off is pretty ugly though so I try to avoid that, ahaha!

(did I just do the silver lining thing again? LOL! Ughhh) 🙂
