3/10: These hilarious and creative PD Note images are the result of SBS adapting the movie poster of award-winning romantic comedy 김씨 표류기 (Castaway on the Moon, 2009) for the Come Back, Mister subplot where the real Lee JaeHoon is stuck on a desert island. Clever, and cute!^^
Let’s check out the parody and real posters below and compare… (CLICK for larger view)
Even though the production company gave the movie the official English title Castaway on the Moon, the Korean title 김씨 표류기 (pronounced Kim-ssi Pyo-ryu-gi) literally translates to “Mr. Kim’s drifting experience” or “Mr. Kim’s time adrift”…
As far as I can tell, the Korean word “표류” (pyo-ryu) translates to “drifting” or “adrift”, while one of the many uses for “기” is a period or span of time. So, let’s break it down further.
김씨 표류기 → 김씨 (Kim-ssi, Mr. Kim) → 표류기 (pyo-ryu, time or experience adrift) → Mr. Kim’s Experience Adrift
아저씨표류기 → 아저씨 (Ajeossi, Mister or Uncle) → 표류기 (pyo-ryu, time or experience adrift) → Mister’s Experience Adrift
Other wording on the Come Back, Mister parody poster refer to “Jung JiHoon” and “Lee MoonSik”, and “life on a desert island” (무인도 라이프, uninhabited life) and wondering what the heck they’re going to eat. Lol~ Hard times, poor things.
There you have it. Poor ajeossi, castaway!
I’m a student, certainly not fluent in Korean, so if any of you native speakers out there would like to correct or add something here, please chime in! I’d appreciate any help. Thanks!
