  1. OMG! I watched the new drama “Second Chance” on Fox last night at 9. What a pleasant surprise! It looked like one of those new shows where the only interesting parts are in the promos, know what I mean, but it wasn’t like that at all. It wasn’t just another resurrection plot. It was compelling, suspenseful, funny, and well told. Well, at least the premiere was, but I’m fully expecting episode 2 to be more of the same. Loved the subplots, too, not the same tired ones at all, and deliciously complicated, and unapologetic. A good tagline, as well. “Would you take a second chance [be brought back to life] if you got one? You might not if you knew what it would be like.” Ooooh. 🙂

Looking forward to possible discussions on this one.

[EDITED TO ADD] Matter of fact, it kind of made me think of Rain’s new upcoming body-swap K-drama, haha, where an older man suddenly dies but is sent back to earth in a younger body. Second Chance is about an ornery 75 year old retired sheriff saddled with a public scandal and an estranged son, who is brought back in a younger body after his murder… but that body is his OWN, made younger, stronger, and faster than a normal human by experimentation. And it goes MUCH DEEPER than that, even.

  3. Oh and I got to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens………Loved it!! Star Wars movies were a significant part of my childhood years, so they had some big shoes to fill. I went in that theater trying not to bring all my nostalgic expectations, however, they did indeed give homage to all the movies of the past. They did an awesome job filling the nostalgia quotient, while moving the story forward into the future. Can’t wait until the next movie installment. SMILES……………………….

  4. BTW, I’m really looking forward to Rain’s new drama. I like that they’ve paired him with Lee Min Jung. She’s one of my K-drama faves (ever since BOFs) and she will be much more compatible on screen as a companion for him. She is a more “seasoned” actress. Min Jung can match him “toe to toe” be it comedy or drama….IMHO. The two of them together will “feel” more like a “grown man / grown woman” acting opposite each other rather than “grown man / little sister” duo. Sorry Krystal. Loved you in The Heirs though girlfriend. SMILES……………………………

  8. Into The Badlands SPOILERS below… !!!

OMG, y’all. I just watched this past Sunday night’s season finale, and it took everything in me to not CHOKE VEIL THE HELL OUT. I had a choke hold with her name on it, I swear. WTH was wrong with her? Firstly, since when has the Baron Quinn been such a paragon of truth that you would believe anything he said, much less about your man? Why would you believe his lie that Sunny killed your parents?? And, last time I checked, Sunny has held his reputation as the Baddest Clipper in The Land for a long time. You knew what he was when you got together with him and got pregnant by him, but all of a sudden now it pisses you off that he kills people? You might leave the Badlands with him or you might not, depending on how you feel? Stay there then, if the Badlands are so great. Girl, bye. I understand you’re grieving your parents’ murder, but you’re being stupid and ridiculous now and it ain’t attractive.

And you, Sunny. You’re letting people rattle your cage a little too much. Dude, never let them see you sweat! What are you doing? It’s about time you put Quinn out of commission, but dang, I woulda done that weeks ago, cut his ass, grabbed my woman and MK and left the premises and cut anybody who got in my way. It’s not like anybody would have been mad at you for killing the fool. They would’ve thanked you and let you go on your merry way. His tool of a son sure as heck wouldn’t have done anything to bother you. Sheesh.

On the flip side, I loved the 3 monks showing up and showing the same abilities as MK. (Poor Sunny though, ouch!) And what a treat for the head monk to be played by Cung Le! Awwwwwesome. 😀

    • ****** SPOILERS *******

I kept trying to rack my brain over who the head monk was. I was like “dang it….I know him!” LOL. Yes, that was a fly scene. Martial arts was working overtime in that one. Loved it! Ok, Into The Badlands…this last episode is more like it. I’m very much looking forward to next season. FINALLY, they link Sunny and MK with the same pendant . I’m thinking what if Sunny and MK have the same powers. Even though he’s never exhibited the same powers as MK, The Widow told Velda that she “used to be” like MK herself. I was like “used to be?”….Hmm. Got me to thinking, maybe Sunny “used to be” as well.

Like you I found myself annoyed with Veil too. Girl, you KNOW Sunny loves you so what possible reason would he have to kill your parents?? Don’t be stupid. I must say I was shocked Sunny took the Baron out so soon in the series. I guess I wanted that lunatic to stay a little while longer so Sunny could “take him out” in a much more epic way. However, I am NOT mad that he already did. Trust me. LOL.

Oh, oh and did you see that smirk on wifey #2’s face when the Baron threw out the first wife?? Oh it’s going down now. Once that first wife “collects her bearings” while she’s at Daddy’s commune, she will come back with a vengeance. Oh yes.

BTW, ran across an episode of The Expanse and taped it. Once I look at it, I’ll tell you what I think.

RAIN….BI…..ya killing me dude, ya killing me! So many shows over here for you to be on. Also, several of these shows….the Asian characters don’t even have to speak……so c’mon sweetness! Lee Byung Hun said not one word in Terminator: Genesys….not one. Oh well. Just saying…………SMILES!

  9. I’ve only watched the first night of both The Expanse and Childhood’s End so far. Childhood gets a resounding YES! Ready to continue onto night #2! Expanse… meh… the jury’s still out. Something about it is bugging me. I love the setting and all, but it seems so convoluted, so many people to remember without a very good reason to… On the other hand, Childhood hooked me hard within the first 20 minutes and kept me all the way until the last. It doesn’t matter that the opening idea wasn’t completely original, the thing is they spun it right. And first night ending, WOW. What y’all gonna do now, huh? I don’t think 15 years was long enough to wait to show yourself, Karellen, LOL~ Prolly shoulda waited something like 30. Just sayin’. So now… on to night #2 for both and we’ll see if Expanse gets better to me.

      • Childhood’s End was a 3-night, 2-hour episode series that showed on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of this week. It hooked me from the first few minutes and kept me through the last second of the last night. In the realm of entertaining Stephe, it was absolutely perfect. Shocking, not predictable, and thought provoking fiction. You thought you knew where it was going, but you didn’t. And the visuals… yasss. I know we can spoil here, but I don’t want to in this case because seems like it will show up in other places like Netflix, Hulu, etc. for people to see who didn’t watch it on the telly. As with anything, I’m sure there are folks who didn’t like it or thought it was boring or etc. I’m just saying that it hit the spot for me. I wish I’d written it. (about as far away from Children of the Corn as you can get)

I can totally see the story happening in reality because the human characteristics were right on, haha, and the story was taken all the way to its inevitable conclusion rather than ending with predictable nonsense. The best thing about Childhood is that it was like the Korean drama format that I like so much — a limited amount of episodes, very little filler, jam-packed suspense/action/plot movement each episode, you’re in, you’re out, and it’s done.

In stark contrast, while I really like the setting of The Expanse (genius!), it’s kind of lost me because it has waaaay too many characters for me to get close to and understand and it’s more like a long drawn out detective story/solve the kidnapping in space. A LOT of people love that kind of story and will really enjoy it. I’ve given it 2 episodes and it’s just not for me. It’s a longer weekly series, so you can catch it at 9 or 10 pm early in the week, can’t remember the day…

  11. You know, I’m really liking Into The Badlands, but it’s starting to stagger a bit for me. The trailers got the viewers attention with Sunny, but it’s becoming more and more about this child MK with the special powers. I think the writers should do more to connect Sunny and the kid, like maybe if there were more flashback memories coming from Sunny. I think that could/would connect him to that pendant MK was given by his mother. I think he and Sunny may be from the same place but the writers are being slow about establishing something like that. If the show is about Sunny and he is the star then give us more of his back story. The viewers need to connect with Sunny more by now. They are letting MK and The Widow take over. As a viewer, I’m becoming annoyed and probably impatient. It happens to me to sometimes.

  13. Tonight, I will be watching The Wiz live on NBC. This version of The Wizard of Oz brings back memories. I saw The Wiz on stage locally in Houston at what was then the Music Hall downtown. I wish I could have seen it on Broadway too. SMILES. Saw it before the movie with MJ and Diana Ross and loved it, so seeing the movie was a natural progression. BTW, Diana Ross was Way too old to play Dorothy back then, even it was on film (I still feel that way too). However, that didn’t stop me from loving the movie. So for those who are unfamiliar with this version, let’s just say it’s the “urban” version of The Wizard of Oz. Heaven knows, there have been many, many versions since Judy Garland first wore those ruby slippers. SMILES.

    • I loved the Ross/Jackson version, so I was really looking forward to this.

Gosh, the costuming was to die for. The sets were to die for. Mary J, Queen, Common, Uzo doing Glinda, there were no words. I mean, WOW.

      However.

For some reason, there were moments where I was bored out of my skull. I don’t know why, as not one second of the Ross/Jackson version was boring. Not one. The only thing I can come up with is that maybe it’s because some moments were kind of anti-climatic, almost like no big deal… like when Mary J was melted with water. There was no building up of tension, I didn’t feel any real “danger” like in previous versions. Dorothy just threw the water right quick and it was over. And for some reason, it seemed like the Lion would not get excited about anything. Whenever he sang or spoke, he seemed slow and lethargic, calm cool and collected when as a coward, he should have been quaking in his boots SCARED of everything. It was weird. The whole poppy field scene seemed like there was no real danger at all. Let’s just skip through these ladies and BAM, solved that. The flying monkeys were dangerous as hell in the Garland and Ross/Jackson versions. Not this one. *shrug* I don’t know.

Honestly, as production values and history goes, this was a beautiful thing. I’m just not understanding why it felt more like “we’re on the stage singing and dancing” instead of characters come to life, like the older versions. JMHO

      • I understand what you’re saying. Personally, I think musical “theater” doesn’t always come to life on TV like it actually does on the stage. If we were in an audience watching them on stage you would probably feel more of an effect. With stage plays, you are forced to delve directly into your own imagination when you’re viewing the story unfold on the theater stage. Your mind has to fill in the “missing” pieces for continuity sake. I’ve seen a stage version of The Wiz in person and can honestly say I was captivated the whole time. Watching theater on TV has distractions, commercial breaks being one of them. You lose the continuity of the story in your mind’s eye and it can make the play feel disjointed.

I agree with your overall assessment. David Alan Grier should’ve made is Cowardly Lion more “cowardly.” I didn’t feel cowardice coming from him all that much. I must also say that even though I absolutely Loved the idea of seeing a “female” Wiz, I think the part needed a singer with a more dynamic voice. The Wiz is supposed to be all powerful and to me the part felt bigger than Queen Latifah’s voice. That part needed the “power” of a Jennifer Holliday voice. Trust me I have seen Jennifer blow on stage in person and that woman can give you goose bumps, even if you are sitting in the rafters. I didn’t feel that with Queen Latifah’s vocals, even though she does have a lovely voice. Oh and yeah, that poppy field scene left me like…..huh? LOL.

I’m with you, I 1000 percent support this awesome production as a whole but I think there were moments that could have been better.

  15. You know, I find myself watching Transformers (the first one) again this morning for the 9 millionth time and something occurred to me. It would be so cool to see Tyrese come on Empire as well. I’m so used to him as an actor now, I forgot about his singing and then I remembered he does have a new R&B album out now. Rain also connected with him back in the day too. I think an Empire episode with the two of them would be a nice one as well.

Guuuurl………..Boo Boo Kitty has lost her mind. Girlfriend drove off with Hakeem’s little Latin cutie at the end of this last episode. She was wearing a blonde wig as a disguise, so who knows what she has in store.

I’m not so sure if I like where they are going with Boo Boo Kitty, because I just don’t see her character being “sprung” over a youngin like Hakeem. A hot boy toy to…..ahem…..”toy around” with….yes, but to get all desperate and kidnap his girlfriend kinda crazy?? No, I’m not really buying it. Her character was very self assured when we first “met” her. I don’t like how they are diminishing her. She’s a “snobby bitch” (the character) and they need to take her back to that. I “believed” her as that. If that makes sense.

Honestly, I think Freda is a better rapper than Hakeem and I’m not into rap on a deep level. However, my ears tell me that Freda is better……but of course Hakeem won the battle. SMILES.

    • That’s right, we sure have. It’s funny, we recently upgraded our DVR to be able to record more shows. Now it seems I don’t have enough time in the day to watch’em all. LOL. I do hope others chime in with the shows they watch, because I like to find out about shows I’ve never seen before.

Oh, another Sci-fi show I recently binge watched was “Dark Matter.” I watched it on Netflix so I’m not sure if it will be coming back or not. This show also got my attention from the first episode, but I don’t know yet if I will keep up with this one. It’s one of those shows that will lose you if you don’t watch the first episode. I will say that one of the central characters is an Asian male played by actor Alex Mallari, Jr. and in his backstory he’s a prince who was forced to flee before he could take his rightful place as Emperor. His evil stepmother (the Empress) killed his father so her son (his half-brother) could take the throne.

The intriguing part about Dark Matter is that it starts out with 7 central characters, each waking up one by one out of cryostasis with no memory of who they are or how they came to be on the spaceship they’re on. They name themselves numerically in the order they woke up. A few episodes in, it becomes clear that “Six” is kinda like the computer whiz kid, whose brain works really well solving any kind of gadgetry. Her mind also has her seeing glimpses of the memories of the others at different stages in their lives when she sleeps. This is how “Four” finds out he’s a prince and heir to the throne of his people. Visually it’s cool to see another futuristic take on Asian culture. The character “Four” is also the strong, silent type with expertise in martial arts. I guess it’s really hard to separate Asian male actors from this part of Asian culture. I haven’t seen a non-Asian martial arts expert since actor Jim Kelly was on the scene many years ago. SMILES……………………….

      • Gurl, our DVRs be smokin’. I’m surprised they’ve held up to our level of demands, LOL.

Hmmm… I almost watched Dark Matter, but the waking up out of cryostasis one by one was something I swear I saw before and left me kind of lukewarm… Now, reading your comment about the prince forced to flee before ascending to the throne is RIGHT UP MY ALLEY, so I might have to rethink that decision!

I have been waiting on The Colony, and The Expanse. I hope they’re good.

I’ve been all in with Code Black, and The Bastard Executioner at present and pretty happy with them. In Asian drama, I’m watching T.O.P. in Secret Message (Kdrama), The Hours of My Live (Jdrama), and Future Diary (Jdrama) on DF. HULU is reserved for my UK stuff and Anime/Manga. Whew! LOL
