[article][Global Post] How we restored the K-pop community’s faith in journalism.
— Cloud cover by: Stephe, Managing Editor ^@@^
When Terri found the article below (↓) in a Google Alert this earlier evening, we just cracked up. LOL! Thanks, GP, for giving us a good giggle. Y’all are something else. (Yes, I am the fool who gave them the “restoring the faith” headline. Ouch!) 😛
On a serious note, though, thanks for setting the record straight. And let’s see if you can keep my faith restored, hm?
For anyone who’s curious as to what would set us off like that, the original article (← to your left) began like this. We’d already been through weeks of bottom-feeding South Korean Media lies printed as truth, and misleading crap about Rain being celebrated while updates that cleared the air were blatantly ignored, so when I set eyes on Rain being one of the seven soldiers filmed drinking in a private restaurant the night of June 21 and sentenced to military jail (Yonhap News is the true culprit here), it was just… ON.
The mention of Rain’s scandal with Kim TaeHee earlier this year wasn’t a concern at all, because that’s true. See how that works? ^@@^

How we restored the K-pop community’s faith in journalism
Are K-pop commenters the most important commenters of all? With one correction, GlobalPost goes from tabloid rag to restorer of faith.
As an international news company, we try to be a website of record for many things: major conflicts, the globally shifting middle class and, of course, Korean pop.
But we’re not always perfect, as a recent incident demonstrates. The original version of a wire story from South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency published on our site last week caught the attention of K-pop fans for erroneously suggesting that South Korean pop star Rain, along with other celebrity soldiers, was sentenced to military prison after being caught on camera misbehaving.
Vigilant Rain fans were not happy with the slip — and they let us know:
Korean pop, for those with an unworldly cultural palette, is a global phenom. K-pop has been called “South Korea’s Greatest Export,” while Psy’s “Gangnam Style” became the third most popular single in 2012 in terms of global digital sales.
GlobalPost received dozens of comments as well as tweets and emails from concerned K-pop fans about the story — in fact, it was one of our most-commented stories in recent weeks. Of course, we regret any errors in news stories appearing on our site, and looked into the matter promptly.
Finding incorrect information, we edited the story and issued a correction, as is our policy.
We soon found that K-pop fans can be as velvet-gloved with their praise as they are heavy-handed with their critiques — a bit of a surprise, considering their initial vehemence:
We’re glad we set the story straight with the help of our readers.
And for the record, we do not have a secret agenda against one of the world’s most influential entertainers — no matter what Stephen Colbert would have you believe.

Oh I love this! People better not get on us Clouds’ bad side! I wish I’d seen this in enough time to make my own comments heard. Ah well, I’m sure there’ll be a next time.

I was impressed with the vigilance Rain’s Clouds put into requesting GP’s article be updated with accuracy. I was surprised GP made the changes and even stunned they made an article concerning the how and why of the changes. Great job ladies on keeping them honest!

haha so funny! it’s cool they haven’t this agenda but I start to think that almost every other media (especially in Korea) has it.

I was shocked to see mine as well. I guess I was “heavy-handed” as you say, but oh well. I said what needed to be said and it’s also how I was feeling at that moment, so I’m not sorry…at least not at this point.

It’s a really small victory in the whole Big Picture, but even a small piece is one less piece of bad. In Rain’s world, every little bit counts.

I hope you link this to The Cloud. Clouds in Korea need to see that change can happen, when that one journalist who cares about the truth actually listens. Love this!

A Korean Cloud told me on Twitter that some Rain fans on DC Rain Gall were talking about it and saying how glad they were that Rain had us all over here. 🙂
I tried to find it on the DC Inside forum page she sent, but I just couldn’t find it in all the Korean…

*Happy dance*……I’m glad that he’s got us too. Yeah, sometimes there is still a lot of Korean to wade through to “see” what you need to. Well, maybe a Korean Cloud will tweet a translated link if they don’t mind. Hope so anyway. I’d like to think this might give Bi a little bright spot in the “sea” of darkness right about now.

Hi Stephe,
you can try this, but it says website is blocked due to its containing having malware,& when advanced, it can open with your own risk to damage to your computer
I went in anyhow, just careful not clicking any suspicious video it might contain against authorization, and it’s been for 2 yrs, I have no problem
this site is in korean : http://gall.dcinside.com/rain

Hi, suhe.^^ I get the malware warning too whenever I try to go to DC Inside, and I think it’s a mistake because I’ve never had any problem there either, like you. Thanks for letting people know this with your comment. 🙂
