[opinion] From Stephe’s desk: Rain has been the object of a “witch-hunt” worthy of Salem.

bi_20120409

The term “witch-hunt” has been used since the 1930s as a metaphor to describe the persecution and/or destruction of a person or group of people by mob mentality, particularly when the person or persons are condemned for either no true crime or minor infractions. So, as you can see, this is the best term in the dictionary to describe what has happened to R.O.K. Army Corporal Jung JiHoon (a.k.a Rain) since the first of the new year.

The many irresponsibly written and just plain bad articles that have been spread across the Internet concerning this young soldier/career entertainer have, as we understand it, inflamed South Korea’s “netizen” community to leave a petition of over 3,000 messages on the Republic of Korea’s military website, calling for everything from Rain’s head on a platter to prison to an entire repeat term of his mandatory service. And why is that, you ask? Was he caught smuggling South Korean secrets to the North? Running a black market for military weapons underground? Committing fraud by living at home for 15-months and not serving any of his time?

Nope.

After 5 months living in the dirt with the Infantry and 10 months of toiling away in entertainment while keeping up with his everyday basic duties, Rain is alleged to have grabbed three rides back to base with Kim Tae Hee and had his hat off once.

*crickets*

Yeah, that’s pretty hardcore.

Some discipline from his superiors that fits the infraction(s), I can see. “Netizens” hunting Rain down with torches and pitchforks as if the entire infrastructure of the country has been compromised is utter nonsense that makes South Korea look really bad.

» Wall Street Journal: It’s Not the Girl, It’s the Hat

Sorry, WSJ. Try again. The question has already been answered quite firmly by Rain’s superiors—he has not taken more off-days than allotted to him, and all of his records to that effect are in order. They have not changed that stance, yet the Media just keeps it going.

AND THE HAT IS NOT A PUNISHABLE OFFENSE.

»  Nate, Sports Chosun via Allkpop: Rain’s Label Apologizes for Breaking Military Attire Regulations

Okay, I’m shocked. That was actually a decent article. Whodathunk.

» The Hankyoreh: Singer was allowed to leave base to work on music, but also met actress Kim Tae-hee, and didn’t keep his hat on

This begs the question—how the heck are uniformed soldiers supposed to get back to post after doing off-post duties? Shouldn’t they already have Army transportation with them, seeing as they are technically working? There are only two ways to get back to post—military transportation or civilian transportation. And if the civilian way isn’t allowed… Hello? Rain and everyone else in entertainment should ALREADY be accompanied by an officer and brought back Army style, but let’s make a big deal about changing it now after folks have been doing it for a gazillion years before Rain even enlisted. Why wasn’t Rain escorted if he was on duty? And if he was off duty, why is there a problem and charges pending?

» HanCinema: Rain To Face Disciplinary Committee Next Week

Hahaha. 94 days, huh? Or did someone else say 71? And did someone else say 62? Either way, none of those amounts hold a candle to what BOOM and his pals were doing in 2010. 150 days, 130 days, 119 days (which makes this statement: “Rain has raised eyebrows by taking 94 days off base, or one-fifth of his 450 days of service so far, more than twice the number of average holidays enjoyed by other troops from 2009 to 2012” a straight up lie.) Where were the “netizens” and the rules back then? At Starbucks ordering a caramel macchiato latte? And why hasn’t anyone picked up on the fact that there are some soldiers serving right now who have used even more days than Rain has? Hmm?

» HanCinema: Hyun Bin was different, he gave up his stand down

Don’t get it twisted—I admire and support Hyun Bin wholeheartedly, and I am beyond relieved that he is finally out of there. I really worried about him. But let’s get real. You don’t know what all may be sealed up in his file that the Media hasn’t dug out. You don’t. Hopefully, nothing. I pray that he is free and clear. And by the way, I see little difference in Rain becoming an Ultra Warrior in the hardest Infantry camp, at the DMZ, for five months and then going to Army DEMA (entertainment), and Hyun Bin becoming an Ultra Warrior in a front line Marine unit and then going to serve in the ROK Marine Corps PR Division. We should be proud of them both. And last I checked, it isn’t shameful to use the off-days that an employer gives you, if you want to. Don’t y’all do that on your jobs?

The big picture:

There is something wrong with all entertainment soldiers, not just Rain, being held in such contempt by the public when it is clear that the public doesn’t even know what these young men go through in their jobs.

One last thing, for the moment:

Before Rain was caught without his beret, it wasn’t a punishable offense… but now it is? How does that work?

Exactly when soldiers are required to wear their berets really needs to be nailed down. We’ve heard everything from off-duty in public… to whenever they’re in public… to whenever they’re outside and in public… to whenever they’re off-post… To “Rain will be punished because head coverings are required to be worn outside when you are in uniform at all times”…

…and something’s not jiving.

Defense Ministry “Regarding the alleged special privilege granted

The authorities have issued a statement clarifying their position regarding the controversy that has arisen regarding whether the singer Rain(age 31, Jung Ji Hoon), known to be in a romantic relationship with actress ‘Kim Tae Hee’, received special preferential treatment during his military service. On the 4th, the MBC TV show entitled ‘Section TV Entertainment Communications’ (hereafter referred to as “Section”) reported on the controversy regarding the special preferential treatment Rain allegedly received as an entertainment soldier. The controversy about the military’s preferential treatment flared up after the entertainment media outlet Dispatch reported that Rain and ‘Kim Tae Hee’, were in a romantic relationship, along with a photo of the two celebrities on a date. Initially, criticisms were made about Rain’s outfit. In the photos disclosed, Rain was not wearing the regulatory military hat, and was wearing a civilian jacket over his military uniform. A spokesperson for the Defense Ministry stated that “A soldier must always maintain an orderly outfit to uphold the dignity of the military” and added that “Rain will not necessarily be punished, but the plan is that he will be instructed to wear the military outfit properly through training and guidance.” According to the report made by Dispatch, Rain went on dates with ‘Kim Tae-Hee’ as frequently as around once a week since last November, while on overnight or daytime leave. Immediately following the report, there was a deluge of critical comments on the internet claiming that “The military granted Rain preferential treatment as an entertainment soldier.”
In actuality, the average number of days that an ordinary soldier receives for vacation is 44 days. Entertainment soldiers receive an average of 75 days, which is around 1.7 times more. A spokesperson of the Defense Ministry explained that “There were two large scale performances given by Corporal Jung during the Yeosu Expo. He needed time to prepare for the performances. Also, when he needs to go far for a ‘K-Force Special Show’ performance, he sleeps over on location. Even if the location is closer, it is around midnight by the time he returns to Seoul. In such cases, he sleeps at the Defense Agency for Public Information Services, and those days have totaled 19. Those instances were included in the number of Rain’s vacation days disclosed to the public (a total of 71 days including 17 vacation days, 10 overnight leaves based on individual performance, and 44 overnight stays for official duties).”The spokesperson added that “A disciplinary committee is planned to be held regarding the issue of having gone on a personal date after military duties, and the failure to wear the military hat.”

  10. Something crossed my mind earlier today. Yes there are 3,000 people in South Korea signing a petition and that’s a lot but before WE verbally lynch the entire country for bailing on Rain keep in mind the population of S. Korea is 49,779,000. So out of 49 MILLION plus people 3,000 signed a petition. Granted when it comes to petitions for every one person who has the guts to sign it there are probably two more who feel the same way and won’t sign it. So even then you still talking about 9,000 out of 49+ million folks.

So, hopefully it really is not all of S. Korea calling for sanctions on Rain.

    • Alisa,

Thank you for saying that. That is correct, the whole country is not bashing Rain. However, the Korean Clouds in his official fan club are extremely distraught, because many news reports over there are also sensationalizing the story. Finally, in the past day or so, reports of people stepping up to defend Rain (and all of the entertainment soldiers, actually) are starting to come out.

We do hope some of those news reports will be translated into English very soon. When they are, we will share them with you all.

    • I don’t feel like the whole country hates him. However, I do feel like enough people have blown up this situation for it to “feel like” a major betrayal coming from one’s own countrymen. Especially considering all his name, face and public persona in general has meant to/done for the country as a whole. Korea was nowhere on my radar (personally) until I became aware of Bi and I’m sure there are others out there just like me. Oh, I knew of the country of course, but it had no meaning for me until I became a Cloud.

I also try to remember that a lie is Always believed before the truth can even take root. If everybody thought reasonably and rationally then we wouldn’t even have to send ribbons of support, but that’s not the case. We don’t know how much if any information he’s getting. He may think some of his Clouds have abandoned him (you never know). He probably has no clue and would like to know the extent his reputation has been damaged on this side of the ocean as well. So he really needs to know how his U.S. Clouds feel. If these types of situations hold true like that story about Daniel Kim that Terri posted the link to, then even When this blows over (as it will no doubt) there will still be some who will only think of Bi and this scandal. They will hold it over his head for years to come if not forever. That’s why IMO he needs to build a career somewhere else, completely out of the Asian market…become even more successful and that will put some major distance between Bi and this craziness.

      Like

      • I do agree that the ribbon campaign will help Rain know his Cloud support is strong. I hope he is still allowed to get his fan mail though. I know he is confined to his barracks but not sure what other restrictions they have on him. I do believe Rain should park his sexy butt here in the U.S. once he gets discharged just to get away from it all. Get some R&R and recharge his creative energy in the birthplace of the music genre he loves so much. But I don’t believe he should abandon S. Korea and take the ex-patriot route. I don’t recommend that at all.

He’s not the first S. Korean celeb to be bashed with the verbal club and he won’t be the last. He just needs to get with his PR people to create a plan of action to rebuild his image. What would work WONDERS to turn that attitude tide around….let him come to the States and just make it big here. All of a sudden his skin-folks be talking about he their kin-folk ROFL. and would want him to come back home.

Look what happened to Jay Park a few years ago. He got LOTS of flack in S. Korea and then he took his butt back home to the U.S. and kept it movin with his career like it was nothing but a thang. Allll of a sudden folks from S. Korea wanted him back there….even though America is his home. And he went back and is doing pretty good with his career I think.

        Like

        • Well Alisa, to me that’s a given. Bi will undoubtedly become even more successful because his career trajectory has been/is poised for that anyway. He entered the military with his place/plans in entertainment firmly intact and ready to be picked up exactly where he left off once he’s discharged. I also have no doubt that when he gets a blockbuster movie under his belt from THIS side of the ocean, his “skin-folks” will no doubt want to lay claim back on his sexy self. If anything Korea is TRULY FICKLE like that. (*queue music…..Break up to make up that’s all we do…first you love me, then you hate me….that’s a game for fools* ~ The Stylistics). So that is the part that’s a given.

The Bi that I have come to know will never become an ex-pat fully, we Clouds already know that about him. He loves Korea too much, even though unspeakable “ish” happens to him all the time. He’s the type to (1) Rise above…..he just will and usually does (2) I think his “wounds” would have to go even deeper than what’s happening to him now, in order to make him want to become a permanent ex-pat. So, I don’t think there is a fear of that happening. Even though, what HAS happened to him already would make even the strongest person buckle at the knee.

I will add one more thing though. We can never know the “heart” of another human being fully, so whether or not “ex-pat” will ever be a description for Bi will truly depend on…..well Bi and His state of mind. I, as well as, several of us do feel he DOES need to come here (the States) and chill for a while however. Now THAT I feel he does need to do. However, even that may not be what he feels he needs to do in the immediate. So, that will also be a “wait and see” kind of thing.

          ** DISCLAIMER**…………………………..

NO “Nutizens”……we ARE NOT SAYING that Bi will become an ex-pat. So, RUMORS BE DAMNED…..we are not saying that here at Cloud USA and don’t even Think About insinuating anything of the kind!!

          Like

          • LOL. Seriously glad you put the nutizens disclaimer at the bottom of your comment, BiA.

You are right. Rain is a proud Korean man. They haven’t treated him very well sometimes, but it is his home. I think. I mean the man’s going to probably be really busy for the next 10 years. There’s no telling WHERE we’ll find him from one moment to the next.

That being said, I don’t know how in the heck he and Kim Tae Hee will be able to maintain a relationship. With him in the U.S. and her in Korea or Japan or wherever she is doing her stuff. That long distance romance stuff may not sound like a big deal, but it is. It ain’t fun trying to keep in touch and keep the romance alive with thousands of miles between you. The phone can only go so far. (Did I say that out loud?)

              • Hm. I don’t know that Kim Tae Hee has an official Twitter account. There are two Twitter accounts that pop up when you search for Kim Tae Hee on Twitter, but neither of them are verified as being her “official Twitter.” Does anybody know anything about her agency and who to ask about that?

In the meantime, I wouldn’t believe anything on Twitter that either account said, until we know if one of them is really Kim Tae Hee talking.

A big hint that the Twitter account you are talking about is NOT her official Twitter is this: Kim Tae Hee’s agency did admit to being in a relationship with Rain, but only for about a month. And the real Kim Tae Hee would never refer to allkpop as a credible source for news for her. I mean really.

                • Good points. I did go to her official international website and didn’t see a Twitter link. So yeah no way to tell for certain. I just checked and Rain’s twitter account is not verified either actually.

The logistic issues you mentioned are all valid. What I know for darn certain is that these two will not be meeting every Sunday for a date. No chance of that happening again. Fool DEMA once shame of you fool DEMA twice …..you might not get discharged in July. Rain got sense. So logistically that relationship probably is and if Rain is smart should be on hold until after his discharge. Rain does not need another picture of him on a date posted all over the net while he is in the military. That would put so much fuel on this “entertainment soldiers’ leave” firestorm it would blow up in Rain’s face…hard. Rain needs to just chill for six months.

After July 10th….just depends. But I don’t see Rain sitting still long enough to pursue a serious relationship right after his discharge. He has too many plans I think. My opinion is by the time Rain gets out the Kim Tae Hee issue will be something in his past.

I’ve been with Cloud USA pretty much the entire 3 years they’ve been online and I’m not going to change now. I think most Clouds who have been around these parts since that time, know this about me as well. If I feel I have overstepped my boundaries or possibly offended someone I will apologize directly to that individual (and I have done so in the past). To know this is to know me (to the extent that you can online) and I’m not changing who I am or how I comment. If you think my comments are too “colorful” now, you would have had a hard time reading my comments 3 years ago. I’ve pulled back….Way back, especially when I began to realize that it wasn’t just American English speakers reading this blog anymore, but English speakers from other countries were reading it also. I came to realize that my American “colloquialism” and humor may not necessarily translate to others from other countries. Even so, I also came to realize that I couldn’t “stifle” myself too much either and become something/someone I’m not.

This is an American based blog basically, therefore it caters to American English speakers and sensibilities first, then English speakers around the world in general second. I hope this response does not upset you, as that is not my intent….my intent is only to explain (if you will) who I am personally.

I will, however, ALWAYS abide by what Terri and Stephe say do, as this is their blog and I respect them and their authority and their right to govern it as they see fit.

And I’ve read the same concept on other parts of the internet so I was speaking about a collective voice not one person in particular. I address people directly so if I ever type something and it’s not directly in response to one person then I’m talking in a more general sense.

Most stuff I read online just cracks me up so usually my replies are typically good natured and good humored…never accusing or harsh. I’m never upset by anything written to me online. I’ve been on message boards of one kind or another since the early part of 2000 when they first became popular and I’ve seen some SERIOUS online debates ….like being worried about an online poster in an abusive relationship not posting for weeks and people who have met her offline during a meetup agreeing to call her to check on her. I’m quite seasoned when it comes to online conversations so I take things quite lightly and never got too involved in online debates. 😀

Not a problem. I take things pretty lightly too, until I don’t. When I don’t, I will not comment at all. One thing I am well aware of are my own limitations and when mine have been reached I chill. I have only ever become involved in one true online “discussion” and that was way in the beginning of my time here. I was bated by what I felt was an aggressive response to a comment I made. That response felt like a personal attack…..heck it was personal because it specifically addressed me. Of course I felt compelled to respond back.

One thing (among many) I can appreciate about Stephe and Terri is they will step in with a quickness when comments begin to take on a certain tone. I appreciate Stephe for doing so that day, because my inner “Shanay-nay” wanted to burst loose. *SMILES* (I don’t even relate to Shanay-nay under normal circumstances). For the most part, I’m just a funny Noona who likes to laugh, “love on Bi” and interact with people who are like minded. In person, I’m quiet….online my inner comedian comes to fore. This is BiA.

  15. (*Standing O…..clap, clap, clap*) Great commentary Stephe!! This is why I say LOGIC rules the day. Your post was more than well thought out, it just Makes SENSE…..plain and simple. (*Just the facts, m’am*) is all I heard in my head reading this piece.

I would love to see how DEMA will try and “talk away” your photographic evidence (soldiers without hats) above. “Who are you gonna believe me or your lying eyes,” is what they’ll try to say. Is this situation about Tae Hee? I think not so much anymore. This is has turned straight up into some military, political power move BS that Bi, unfortunately, walked right into unknowingly. Tae Hee is just “along for the ride” at this point.

I do agree with Lotus, the initial “nutizen” pyscho behavior Was more than likely started by jealous women stuck in some alternate fantasy universe. Somehow letting themselves foolishly believe that this man could be theirs, so long as he stays/appears single. Bottom line is would he (or any celeb) Really want to “get with” someone who could just as easily “snap” and turn on him as “love” him. Truly?…….NOT!

Politicos took the “ball” from the initial “nutizen” fan foolishness and made it about the military now and on a deeper level Somebody wants this to tarnish the country’s Main ambassador/spokesperson. This seems like some “dark alley” type hand shake agreement “ish” between some clandestine parties.

  16. Great Job Stephe and you’re right it is the Mob mentality at a super grand scale due to technology and the internet. RAIN isn’t the only one that get this kind of treatment seems to happen to Celebrities a lot but RAIN is our celebrity so it hits us a lot harder.

I hope he knows that he has a ton of support to go with all the wackos out there that have nothing better to do then start rumors and stir the pot just to have some hurtful fun at RAIN’s expense. Hopefully your’s and Terri’s Yellow Ribbon Project will help him realize that.

  20. As I first said its all about JiHoon having a woman! And foolish old and young women thinking to seriously romantic thoughts of this man and truly thinking he’d be with them.

    ROK, DEMA. GROW A PAIR!!!!!!!!

when will these men stand up to these women? Don’t they have a mind of their own? Don’t get me wrong I’m all for woman’s rights heck I am a woman but I want my man to be able to think for himself and if he wants, needs my opinion just as if I wanted or needed his, we help each other. But if Korea is truly anything like the kdrama’s which its kinda looking that way. Women run it! And the men are in the palm of their hands. Hahahahaha I must say it is very intriguing. But even in your military? Now that’s were the men are suppose to be men! Right?

Well I guess we shall see?

  22. What the heck ………….. From what I’ve seen and read of Rain’s military enlistment Rains has been a model soldier he has worked hard and passed the requirements with flying colors. The military has gotten a lot of publicity by promoting Rains time in the military. Maybe I’m not understanding the depth of the problem but I do know one thing I know that this man that I choose to be a fan of is a good man, a man that takes his responsibilities serious and is a good citizen, a good son and has always made his fans proud. I hope this situation is resolved and it doesn’t take away any of the kindness and gentleness that is another reason we love him. I hope Rain knows how much he is loved and he will overcome this personal attack. I’m sorry this is happening and I am angry too. I feel Rain is being exploited because of his popularity.

I’m sure you haven’t been able sleep well thru all these days waiting for translated articles that will share a better understanding of what is going on. And I’m still waiting for an Official statement from DEMA of what’s going on. I guess we will have to wait till next week. Mean time sending yellow ribbons to Rain.

      • I haven’t sleep well or focused well either. I woke up this morning and had to do some serious thinking because my life this week has been mostly focused on what is going on with Rain….thousands of miles away on a military base in S. Korea. I realized I needed to rebalance my focus so I can get stuff done HERE in Atlanta ROFL. Time for me to read my poetry books and other books from my 300+ books home library. Yes, I’m one of those book collecting loving people. LOL And yes I have books shelved all over my house…including my linen closet :-O

  26. Those pictures of soldiers outside and some with hats and others without hats looks simpleton and is not a good look for a military. When a soldier walks outside the hat hits the head. It’s called respecting the uniform. (I was raised by a military officer by the way.) And yes I cringed HARD when I saw Rain’s picture of him outside with no hat on his head. Anyway that’s just my military brat bias.

OBVIOUSLY, it’s common practice for S. Korean entertainment soldiers to walk around outside with no hat on their heads AND get photographed doing so. For DEMA to clamp down on Rain is just wrong. How can they justify doing any type of sanction against Rain and not do sanctions against the other soldiers in these pictures? This is just one big PR nightmare for EVERYBODY.

    Like

    • LOL. Alisa, you know I would have had the same reaction when I saw him without his cap in that pic if I hadn’t already seen dozens of soldiers do the same thing. So, I just thought the regs were different in South Korea. And now, for them to be punishing him for something like that when everyone ELSE does it all the damned time and DOESN’T get disciplined for it, just sticks in my craw.

I say we should send all of these pictures to the PR Division and suggest they do some disciplining of some other soldiers, shall we? Okay, maybe we’d better not. The other soldiers are already hating Rain for getting himself caught as it is. I know soldiers. I know they’re wanting to kick his @ss right about now with all the crackdowns going on over there.

      • What they need to do (by examples of high ranking officers who themselves are standing outside with no hat on WTF??) is instill into every one of their soldiers what that uniform means. Does not matter if they wear it for 21 months or 21 years. If the officers are setting a bad example what do they expect of their young enlisted and their “just here because I’m required” enlisted??? But…..this is not a military ethics blog ROFL…I’ll stop.

Back to Rain  He does not deserve the heat he is getting….especially after seeing these pictures and learning about the culture of the entertainment soldiers division. I think public support for Rain will increase. That’s how these things work out. First the haters come out of their nests in droves and the supporters tend to be quite at the beginning. Then the supporters begin to cautiously come forth and the momentum picks up. Rain will be fine.

Rain excels at everything he does. Due to his magnitude of celebrity status he is always under the microscope. Very high price to pay.
Excellent pictures, do we have an explanation of why some wear the beret and some don’t. I see Rain (and KCM) wearing the beret in all of them.

    Like

    • Yeah, ain’t that hat thing a kicker? LOL. I have never seen Rain appear anywhere without his beret. EVER. And these pics say that Rain was pretty particular about being in the proper uniform, huh?

In the U.S. military, headgear is supposed to be worn whenever the uniform is worn, except when it interferes with the safe operation of a military vehicle, indoors, or when attending evening events (after Retreat) when wearing a dress or mess uniform. Headgear is to be carried by hand when not worn.

That being said, having an ex who was an Army Officer, I know that he always took his cap off while he was driving. The rule he told me is that if there is a “roof” over your head, you are allowed to take your cap off. So, you can have your cap either on or off in a car. Which he did. If we were going long distances, he took it off. If we were going short distances, he was just as likely to keep it on.

He also said that taking your hat off in places that were “partially” outside was also allowed, like when pumping gas at a gas station under an overhang or attending a company picnic under a pavilion. That sort of thing.

Since the ROK Army appeared to be pretty lax about the beret thing, I imagine that Rain simply took his beret off while he was driving Tae Hee’s car and then didn’t put it back onto his head until after he got out of the car and started walking away. Like I said earlier, we don’t know what happened in the moments before and after the shot of Rain without his beret was taken.

      Stupid paparazzi.

      Terri :-}

      • Oh, and just a side note. A motor vehicle is a “no salute zone” too. So, that’s why soldiers don’t have to salute an officer walking by if they are sitting in a car.

Just an odd tidbit for you, for entertainment purposes. LOL.

        Terri :-}

  28. Jesus a list of 3,000 people asking for Rain’s head?!! People are CRAZY in Korea!! Isn’t this the same person who soldiers in all bases adored and cheered for? But I’m soo mad at DEMA for not making crystal clear rules for their soldiers knowing they’ve being under suspicion for years and not protecting them by making a statement with enough power to shut the hell up the media!! Yes cuz I know the government have that power, use it in the entertainment business whenever they want and the media shut down in a second flat! That’s why I think that “Rain’s situation” is related to either Kim Tae Hee’s family not wanting Rain near her or something else we don’t know about. I pray Rain can survive this storm unharmed and get out of Korea as soon as he’s able cuz seriously, his country don’t deserve him. :”(

I know for some time now that Korea is not very fond of Rain or his achivements, but reading some of the comments some netizens wrote made my skin and heart boil. Yes, he made a mistake by not wearing that damn hat, he’s a celebrity, ok, make a model out of him. But to spread such nonsense about the over hours…is indescripbable, wordless.
