{*ETA 7/22: One of our commenters has given a tip that the Korean word 비상 (bisang) is associated with Chinese characters, and not only that, but the Chinese characters for “flight” are pronounced the same as the Korean word for “emergency.” Which, in my mind, explains why there are Chinese characters in the movie’s title (I’ve wondered about that for a long time), and also tells me that 비상 and 飛上 should be used together in order to convey the correct meaning in this case. Very cool.

Yes, I am loving the way the SOOMPI writer calls Rain forever sexy, internationally renowned, and incredible. It makes me happy. I openly admit it. (Not to mention, s/he used a portion of one of artist Nao’s drawings in the post. Double thumbs up.)
AND another thing. I also appreciate the way the SOOMPI writer uses Emergency! throughout the post, seeing as that is what the movie title ACTUALLY TRANSLATES TO. Not just any old casual Flight: Close To The Sun, but an urgent, life or death situation. Let’s break it down, with Korean characters in blue, and Chinese characters in green.

Rain Tweets “Emergency” Cast Photo
It’s an “Emergency”! Rain is eating with the cast…over. On July 21st, the forever sexy and internationally renowned star Rain tweeted an interesting photo of himself. It is find Mr. Precipitation Day in the following image! He is seen seated at a table with a group of people. Those people are his castmates in the upcoming movie entitled “Emergency: Closer To The Sun.” He along with his co-star Shin Se Kyung are enjoying a meal with everyone on set.
His soon-to-be released flick is a remake of the 1964 classic “The Red Scarf”. This time around, Rain portrays a military pilot, while Se Kyung transforms into a mechanic. Their director, Kim Dong Wan, will make their love story come to life on-screen.

The picture was of many stars that can’t even be compared with money.
Actors and actresses Kim Sung-so, Yoo Joon-sang, Lee Ha-na, Sin Se-kyeong, Lee Jong-hyuk, singer Se7en, Baek Ji-young and her boyfriend Jeong Seok-won were all in the picture.

Translating “비상” to “Emergency” is incorrect because it is associated with Chinese characters. Pronunciation of Chinese character “flight” is the same as Korean word for “emergency”. Just for your FYI.
By the way, Stephe, how can you find the time to post all the nice things for us to look at? It is amazing just as Rain would have said. I really appreciate your hard work and other staffs’. Hi, stacy. Thanks for your tip… I have yet to find a translator or online dictionary that doesn’t convert “bisang” to “emergency.” I have looked and looked and looked, so if that is wrong, there are a lot of Korean-to-English references that need to be changed. Just sayin’. They need to get it correct, because that’s all a lot of us have to go by. Terri has a new Korean/English/Romanization reference book that she bought the other day… I should probably have her take a look in it, and also ask my native Korean teacher for her input too…
You know, you have answered my question about why Chinese characters were also added to the title in the first place… because one word without the other has the wrong meaning, correct? 비상 and 飛上 must be together for everything to work properly, yes?
It’s not often that we can get input from native or academic speakers, so I really appreciate you chiming in on this. Please speak up and help anytime! What languages do you know? Are you native, or have you studied?

you’re right about using Korean and Chinese characters together to convey correct meaning. “비상” is used for “emergency” more often, therefore translators convert “비상” to “emergency .” If you look for the word in the dictionary, it will show “flight” also. I think that’s why Chinese characters are used with Korean word “비상” in the title.
Korean is my native tongue. I can speak a little Japanese. I know some Chinese Characters but cannot speak at all.
I felt guilty when you said we need Korean translators, but writing is not my thing. Sorry! I’ll just chime in from time to time.
